How do you define being "burnt out"?

How do you define being “burnt out”?
I found this fellow’s definition intriguing:

burning out isn’t just about work load, it’s about work load being greater than the motivation to do work

— Keith Yost
This sounds so very insidious.

  1. I think that definition is missing one key thing: namely, that burn-out is, IMHO, caused by an excess of work–it is a form of exhaustion.
    Laziness != burnout.

    I had assumed a highly motivated individual here that wasn’t working more than 100hrs per week 🙂
